Welcome to the pet peeves section of my website.
Every year at this time you will hear people saying, “Have a great Fourth of July weekend!” or something to that effect. Now I’m going to get all “Sheldon Cooper” on that statement, and don’t dare tell me I’m wrong, because I’m not! And, BTW, I’m not crazy, my mother had me tested!
Here comes the logic. July 4 is a date on the calendar. Independence Day is a national civic holiday. They are not the same thing. If you don’t believe me, think about this. When have you ever heard someone say, “Have a Merry December 25”, or “Have a Safe and Happy December 31-January 1”?
Independence Day is always July 4, and Christmas Day is always December 25, and New Year’s Eve-Day is always December 31-January 1. But you only hear the conflagration of dates with the Independence Day holiday.
It’s high time that stopped.
Have a happy, safe, and enjoyable Independence Day weekend!
P.S. I just thought of something else. Isn’t it interesting, that in the midst of all the startling allegations of federal government intrusions into our personal privacy (probably including this website and my e-mail and phone conversations as well as yours), and in so doing, destroying our independence from over-reaching government intrusions, we have almost totally forgotten the actual name of the holiday? Hmm….
